Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about what osteopathy involves, how to prepare, what it costs, and whether it is a fit for you.

What is a manual osteopath?

A manual osteopath is a hands-on practitioner who looks at how your whole body moves — joints, muscles, fascia and the systems around them — rather than only at the spot that hurts. Sean assesses where movement is restricted, then uses gentle manual techniques to support easier movement and comfort. He graduated from the Southern Ontario College of Osteopathy with a D.O.M.P. and has practised as a Manual Osteopath since 2022.

What kind of concerns do people come in with?

The most common are headaches and migraines, neck, back and posture-related strain, and joint, hand and foot issues such as carpal tunnel or plantar fasciitis. Some people come in for breathing mechanics, digestive tension, or dizziness concerns, and Sean also sees infants and children with a parent or guardian alongside. Manual osteopathy is complementary care and does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

Do I need a doctor's referral to book?

No referral is needed. You can book directly online through the booking system, or start with a free 15-minute phone consultation if you'd rather ask questions first.

Is osteopathy covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans in Canada include osteopathic manual treatment, but coverage, annual limits and per-visit amounts vary by insurer and plan. Receipts are provided so you can submit a claim — it is worth checking your plan's osteopathy or paramedical coverage with your benefits administrator before your first visit.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable, flexible clothing that you can move in — gym shorts and a t-shirt work well. You stay dressed for your session, and Sean works at a pace and pressure you are comfortable with.

Will treatment hurt?

Osteopathic techniques are generally gentle and are adapted to what your body needs on the day. You should not feel sharp pain — if anything feels uncomfortable, say so and the approach is adjusted. Some people notice mild, short-lived soreness after a session.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the concern, how long it has been going on, and what you are hoping to get back to doing. After your initial assessment Sean explains what he found, what may help, and whether follow-up care makes sense — with no pressure to commit to a package.

How is osteopathy different from chiropractic or massage?

All three are hands-on and can be useful. Osteopathy takes a whole-body view, looking for restricted movement beyond the area that hurts and using a wide range of gentle techniques. Chiropractic care is usually centred on the spine and joints, and massage works mainly on soft tissue. If you are not sure which fits you best, the free 15-minute consultation is an easy way to ask.

Is osteopathy safe for babies and children?

Sessions for infants and children are gentle and age-appropriate, and a parent or guardian is always alongside. If your child has a medical diagnosis or you have concerns, it makes sense to talk with your doctor as well.
